Hatco, Inc.
Overview
We’d like to tip our hat to great client and a household name—Stetson Hats, as well as Resistol and Dobbs, who needed new packaging concepts to minimize losses due to dealer-returned damaged goods which plagued their industry. Additionally, Stetson had expanded into the baseball cap arena and needed new product development as well as point-of-sale materials. Another revenue enhancer idea came from Propel—"hat-in-a-box" gift cards.
Solution
Propel Group researched and engineering concepts for crush-proof, corrugated boxes to reduce returns by 88%. Propel also developed designs for a baseball cap product line and point-of-sale displays to launch the new item. Pictured here are "first-time" gift card/boxes for which dealers have claimed to be a big hit for additional sales revenue making it easy to give a custom-made hat as a gift.
Impact
Across-the-board revenue increases have been enjoyed by both the manufacturer and the retailers.
NOVAPLUS
Overview
NOVAPLUS, a supply chain company with a line of private medical products supporting 28% of all medical facilities in the U.S., needed a distinctive identity for their company and a graphic standards system that would cover a broad range of applications. The biggest challenge was developing a system that could be reproduced by various suppliers and processes on a broad range of products ranging from the smallest vial application to a one color imprint on a gallon jug of disinfectant. In addition, all designs had to be approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). A high level of detail had to be considered in the design stage, including legibility and handling of dosage information to prevent possible errors in administering drugs to patients.
Solution
Propel created a logo and identity system to encompass all products and applications. A graphic standards guide was produced in printed and digital format to be distributed to all manufacturers of NOVAPLUS products. Propel also coordinated and managed approval process with the client and FDA to ensure compliance of final package design specifications.
Impact
A graphics system that has been universally accepted by the suppliers of NOVAPLUS and the FDA was created. A stronger presence in the industry was established and medical errors were reduced as a result of clearer and easier to read labels. NOVAPLUS has been in the forefront of bar coding its medical supplies, which was incorporated into all the packaging designs, further limiting dosage and distribution errors.
Lucchese Boot Company
Overview
TLucchese, a boot company known for its expensive handmade boots, was introducing two new lines of boots at a lower price point. They required identity development, packaging, point-of-sale materials and a revamped Web site to drive consumers to the retailers’ stores. Challenges included differentiating products without eroding Lucchese’s reputation for high quality product or diminishing sales of its core product.
Solution
Distinctive identities were created for each product line, including a redesign of all existing packaging to further distinguish the new level of products. Materials used in the manufacturing process as well as construction facts were highlighted in the point-of-sale and marketing materials to assure the consumer that the boots had the legendary quality of a Lucchese. Propel Group redesigned their Web site and increased brand awareness with the total Lucchese product mix reflected. Web site branding was also reflected in all packaging and product guides. The site included a retail locator MapQuest feature for ease of locating retailers and Lucchese product outlets.
Impact
Retailers have fully embraced the new products. They have incorporated the POS materials and increased floor space to accommodate the new Lucchese product lines which has increased consumer awareness. Sales of new product were 200% over goals set, and while realizing a 10% increase in its core product line. A ladies boot line has since been added. The retailer locator functionality on their Web site has greatly enhanced store traffic and retailer goodwill toward Lucchese. A packaging side note: the new package developed for all boot products was engineered to reduce assembly and storage issues in the manufacturing process and, in the end, was 40% less expensive to produce. The box also had a built-in handle, which eliminated the need for a retailer bag and further extended the Lucchese advertising reach outside the store.
